The Nilgiris district superintendent of police, N.S. Nisha, on Saturday (January 24, 2026), inaugurated a special 24-hour motorcycle patrols across Udhagamandalam, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Devala and Gudalur in the district.

The police said that eight motorcycle-borne policemen will be involved in this initiative to bring down crime rates. The policemen will be on patrol duty in the jurisdictions of Ooty town, Ooty rural, Ooty town west, Coonoor, Wellington, Kotagiri, Devala and Gudalur police station limits.

Police will be deployed on these patrol routes in three shifts of eight hours each. They will patrol areas around schools, colleges, railway stations, areas of high public footfall, near fields, agricultural areas, banks as well as businesses and commercial areas, a press release said.

Each policeman, during the patrols, will be in possession of a mobile data terminal to communicate with a central dispatcher who will also be able to direct the patrol vehicles to attend to emergencies. They will also have a body-worn camera, baton light, reflective jackets, sirens, first-aid kits and walkie-talkies.
