A total of 541 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during special enforcement drives conducted by Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police during a two-day special enforcement drive conducted on January 9 and 10 as part of efforts to improve road safety. Hyderabad traffic police booked 404 motorists. Of these, a majority were two-wheeler riders, accounting for 349 cases, while 24 three-wheeler drivers and 31 drivers of four-wheelers and other vehicles were also booked. Meanwhile, Cyberabad traffic police apprehended 137 offenders. Here also, a majority of offenders were two-wheeler riders, accounting for 92 cases followed by 39 four-wheeler drivers, five on three-wheelers and one driving a heavy vehicle. Courts in the Cyberabad commissionerate disposed of 929 drunken driving cases between January 5 and January 9. Of these, 23 offenders were sentenced to a combination of fine and imprisonment, 33 were penalised with fines along with social service, while the remaining 873 cases resulted in fines alone. Traffic police officials reiterated that there would be zero tolerance towards drunk driving violations and said such special drives would continue in the coming days.
