Police have arrested a 27-year-old youth for allegedly murdering his mother at their rented house in Nolambur.

Police said the accused, Nikhil Britto, committed the crime in a fit of rage as his mother, Auxilia, 56, has been repeatedly scolding him for not going to work. Auxilia was residing with her son on Kaalamegam Road in Mogappair West.

Britto, a mechanical engineering graduate, had earlier been employed with a private software firm in Bengaluru, but had quit the job a few months ago and was staying at home. Police said Auxilia, who was unwell, had been repeatedly insisting her son take up employment.

On Wednesday, Britto allegedly sent a message to a friend stating that he had killed his mother. Acting on information received through the police control room, personnel from Nolambur police station rushed to the spot. When the police entered the house, Britto allegedly attempted to flee but was apprehended. Auxilia was found dead with bleeding injuries.

Her body was sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem. Based on a complaint lodged by the house owner, Samadhanadurai, 43, a murder case was registered, and an investigation was launched.

During interrogation, police said Britto confessed to killing his mother by assaulting her with a mobile phone charging cable and a knife. The police seized the charging cable, two knives, and the mobile phone used to commit the crime. The accused was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
