Devi, Emily and now Kitty…there is something incredibly bingeable about watching the heroines of Netflix’s most addictive shows take on life. The beats are undeniably predictable, you can smell the incoming chaos from a mile away, and you probably cannot help but roll your eyes (affectionately, of course) at some of the problems the students at KISS (Korean Independent School of Seoul) grapple with in season 3 of XO, Kitty.

And yet, the show manages to entertain and endear in good measure. Back at KISS for her final year, Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart, more confident and stylish) has much to look forward to, and has a ‘senior sunset list’ ready. There is the promise of a new romance with Min Ho Moon (Sang Heon-Lee) getting closer to the Korean side of her family she has recently reconnected with, and of course, the thrill of some fun and chaos with her now solid friend group that includes besties, Q (Anthony Keyvan), Yuri (Gia Kim), and Dae (Choi Minyoung).

(L to R) Gia Kim as Yuri Han, Minyeong Choi as Dae Heon Kim, Joshua Hyunho Lee as Jin, Jocelyn Shelfo as Madison, Anna Cathcart as Kitty Song Covey, Sunny Oh as Mihee, Anthony Keyvan as Quincy 'Q' Shabazian, Sang Heon Lee as Min Ho Moon in XO, Kitty

There are several stumbling blocks in the way of Kitty’s potentially perfect senior year. For one, there is this constant unease about her new relationship with Min Ho. Is she ever going to fit into his glamorous world? College decisions loom large as well, and Kitty also discovers that she needs to hit the books with a vengeance if she wants to get into her school of choice. We’ve hardly seen students at KISS overtly worry about their academics so this makes for a refreshing change, even if just for a short while.

The latest season though dedicates itself almost wholly to romance and the many budding and rocky relationships at KISS. Q and his boyfriend Jin (Joshua Lee) now have to contend with the presence of a man from Q’s past, Kitty wrestles with trust issues (despite Min Ho and her being open and communicative for the larger part of the season), and Dae navigates his feelings for Eunice (Ryu Han-bi), who is on the cusp of her popstar career taking off. Kitty and Min Ho shippers, this is YOUR season. The romance is fun, flirty and feels like everything fans have been rooting for since season 1. And it helps that both actors sparkle and appear comfortable on-screen. Where is Sang Heon-Lee’s K-Drama contract, Netflix?

XO, Kitty Season 3

Genre: Coming-of-age, romance

Showrunner: Valentina Garza

Episodes: 8

Cast: Anna Cathcart, Sang Heon Lee, Gia Kim, Choi Minyoung, Anthony Keyvan

Synopsis: Back at KISS for her final year, Kitty navigates romance, reconnecting with her family and more as she sets sights on the future

We’ve seen Kitty evolve from season 1 into someone a lot more confident, with a couple (okay, a village) of friends who indulge in her optimism, matchmaking and largely chaotic schemes. Watching a large part of this continue from season to season should get exhausting, but Anna Cathcart’s charms more than make up for it. Do I wish she dealt with her insecurities better? Yes. But this is a show where I know exactly how it all unravels, and how the chaos gets sorted out. So why worry? It doesn’t hurt to revel in this predictability.

Yuri remarks that the friend group has “more drama than a middle school production of Wicked,” and while that’s partly true, season 3 works largely because it eschews any awkwardness lingering from past relationships. Yuri and Kitty in particular make for a solid, supportive duo, especially with Kitty helping Yuri navigate her new, riches-to-rags life.

If Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) waltzed back into our hearts with that surprise cameo in season 2, here, there is a not-so-surprising one from Lara Jean (Lana Condor). I caught myself smiling hard at how Lara comes ready with her signature cookies and her sympathetic ear as she tries to help Kitty sort out her chaos; the wholesome, tropey goodness of the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before universe somehow just never fades. Season three of XO, Kitty revels in this, and makes for an eminently watchable binge fest. Movie or another season, whatever is next, we are ready.
