Condemning the recent death of a trainee veterinarian at Tyavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga, the Indian Association of Women Veterinarians, Karnataka, has demanded a proper investigation and legal action against those responsible for her death.

In a press release, association vice-president Pavithra B.S. on Friday stated that Sameeksha Reddy had completed her five-and-a-half-year veterinary degree and chose the field of wildlife veterinary service out of her passion and commitment. She was sent to treat a bird at 11.30 p.m. without any support staff or adequate safety measures.

The zoo administration had shown complete disregard for the safety protocols and standard operating procedures. Earlier, Reddy and her colleague had informed the senior officials about the unsafe working conditions and lack of staff support. However, their complaints were not heard, she said.

The association took objections to blaming her ‘over-enthusiasm’ for the incident. “Reddy had worked for two years before joining the zoo in Shivamogga. Blaming her ‘over-enthusiasm’ for the incident is an effort to shift responsibility,” she stated.

The association demanded an impartial and independent inquiry into the entire episode, including the role of officials who assigned her the work late in the night.
