Women of Chachadi village staging a protest against liquor shop in their village, in Belagavi on Friday. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT Some women from Chachadi village in Belagavi district staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday, They said that due to a liquor shop in the village, alcohol addiction has increased among men and families are facing hardship. They demanded that the MSIL liquor shop located there should be closed and the young generation should be protected from alcohol addiction. They shouted slogans against the Congress government in the State and expressed their anger. They warned of a fierce struggle if the liquor shop in the village is not closed or shifted to a far-off place. They also said that the liquor shop on the Belagavi-Bagalkot highway is causing accidents as drivers tend to stop there for a drink. They also said that several agents are selling liquor in petty shops, without licence. An activist Shobha Appannavar said that even schoolchildren are getting addicted. Tangevva Bassapure said that if the situation continues this way, they have no option but to end their lives. They submitted petitions to Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Roshan and Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan. The Superintendent of Police promised protection to the protestors and said that action will be initiated against those violating the law. Excise Superintendent of Police Jagadish Kulkarni said that unlicensed sale will be curbed. Violation of licence terms will be investigated, he added. Channamma Angadi, Iravva Yakkundi, Gangavva Somannavara, Basavaraja Thigadi, Mudakappa Meti, Raju Patil and others were present.
