In 1927, when Mahatma Gandhi visited a school in Basavanagudi in south Bengaluru, what followed became a small chapter in the history of India’s freedom movement. The school, named Mahila Seva Samaja, was founded by Parvatiamma Chandrashekara Iyer in 1913 for the upliftment of women. Inspired by Gandhi’s words, a large number of women at the school instantly donated their jewellery to the cause of the freedom struggle. A testimony to Ms. Iyer’s dedication to women empowerment at a time when women’s education was rare and even resisted, the school stands tall today, run by an all-women management.
