A 25-year-old woman thwarted a chain-snatching attempt on the GST Road in Tambaram on Tuesday afternoon, managing to recover her gold jewellery worth about ₹5 lakh, though the suspect escaped.

Police said Vikasini N. of Guduvanchery was walking towards the Tambaram bus stand around 1 pm after attending classes. As she crossed the road near the Hindu Mission Hospital signal, a man wearing a lungi suddenly attacked her and tried to snatch her gold chain.

She resisted and got into a brief scuffle with the assailant. Though he managed to break the chain and flee towards the nearby railway station, her cries for help alerted passers-by, who chased him.

The suspect reportedly threw the broken chain roadside before disappearing into the railway station area. Members of the public recovered the jewellery and returned it to the victim.

Vikasini sustained minor injuries to her neck and hands during the struggle and was treated at a nearby hospital. Tambaram police have registered a case and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify and nab the accused. Further investigation is in progress.
