Woman arrested for chain-snatching attempt posing as census official

Sevvapet Police of Avadi City Police has arrested a 28-year-old woman for attempting to snatch a gold chain from another woman who was alone at home.

Police sources said on Friday (February 13, 2026), while a woman named Shyamala (55) was alone at her house in AVM Nagar, Putlur, an unidentified woman entered the house claiming to be conducting census operations.

While sitting and talking inside the house, the suspect suddenly attacked Shyamala with a knife she had concealed and attempted to snatch the gold chain from her neck. Shyamala managed to escape from the accused, locked the house door from outside, and raised an alarm.

Residents informed the police, following which Sevvapet police arrested the accused, and brought her to the police station to initiate further action in the case. Police arrested the accused B. Pavithra (28) residing in MGR Nagar, Putlur for the chain snatching attempt.

Shyamala has been admitted to the Government Hospital in Tiruvallur and is undergoing treatment.
