The Udupi district police arrested three persons who are accused of stealing gold chain worth ₹ 3.5 lakh, within four hours of the theft reported in Shankarapura of Kurkalu village in Kapu taluk on Saturday.

The police gave names of the arrested as Anand alias Hasansab Amingad, 49, of Joida taluk in Uttara Kannada; Kiran Dharmaraj Godimani, 19; and Shashidhar, 19; both from Haliyal taluk of Uttara Kannada.

In a press note, the police said Helen D’Souza (69) was tying jasmine by sitting with her neighbour in the backyard of her house. Around 9 a.m., one Arun, who had stayed in their house on rent, came with two other persons in a motorcycle. They asked Ms. D’Souza whether there was any room available for rent. They left the place after D’Souza said there were no rooms vacant.

A few minutes later, one among the three returned and sought Ms. D’Souza’s mobile number. As she was giving the number, the person snatched her gold chain and sped away in the motorcycle with two other accomplices.

Following complaint at Shirva police, Inspector checked the footage of the CCTVs in the area. Identifying the black coloured motorcycle used by the thieves, message was passed on to all the police check-posts.

The Byndoor police arrested the three accused persons near the checkpost in Shiroor and handed them over to Shirva police for further investigation. The police booked the arrested persons for offence under Section 309 (4) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police recovered the stolen gold chain and seized the motorcycle used by the arrested persons.

The team that caught the accused comprised of Police Inspectors Azmat Ali and Manjunath Marabad and Police Sub-Inspector Sunil Kumar.

One more arrested

The Malpe police team led by Sub-Inspector Eeranna Shiragumpi have arrested Muttanna, 20, of Kanakagiri taluk in Koppal district, in connection with robbing a fish trader of ₹ 6 lakh worth gold chain on Friday.

The police said while Dayanand Kundar was walking towards Malpe fish harbour, one person stopped him near Sahukar Bar around 4.40 a.m. and asked him about fish. He threw chilli powder on Kundar’s face and dragged him for a few meters, where two others joined. They assaulted Kundar and escaped with the gold chain he was wearing.

On the complaint, the police team traced Muttanna and arrested him on Friday night. The police recovered the stolen gold chain. He was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded Muttanna to 14 days of judicial custody. Search is on for the remaining accused persons, the police said.
