West Bengal SIR: Cases of ‘logical discrepancies’ in progeny mapping come down to 95 lakh

The total number of ‘logical discrepancies’ detected in electors’ enumeration forms in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal has decreased by around 41.51 lakhs since the draft roll was published in December.

Logical discrepancies in progeny linking with the 2002 voter list include instances of mismatch in parent’s name, age difference between an elector and their parent being less than 15 years or over 50 years, age difference between the elector and their grandparents being less than 40 years and one elector linked to over six successors.

As of January 2, 2025, the total number of logical discrepancies is around 94.49 lakh, according to sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal. These cases were being reverified by election officials for the past several days.

Initially, when the draft roll was published on December 16, around 1.67 crore cases were found with logical discrepancies, CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal had said.

Descent into farce: On the Election Commission of India, the SIR

Currently, there are around 51 lakh cases of mismatch in parents’ names, 23 lakh cases of electors with over six progenies, 4.74 lakh cases of age difference with parents being less than 15 years, 8.41 lakh cases of age difference with parents being over 50 years and nearly 3 lakh cases of age difference with grandparents being less than 40 years. 

It is worth noting that Trinamool Congress leaders, including the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, had raised questions on why the Election Commission of India (ECI) is not publishing the list of electors with logical discrepancies in the public domain.

The cases of logical discrepancies are in addition to 30 lakh ‘unmapped’ voters who could not establish a familial link with the voters’ list of 2002 and the 58 lakh names that were deleted from the draft electoral roll on account of being Absent, Shifted, Dead or Duplicate (ASDD).

Before SIR began in the State, there were roughly 7.66 electors listed on the voter list as of October 27, 2025.
