South MLA K. Boominathan, along with Madurai Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, inaugurated a state-of-the-art virtual reality laboratory worth ₹1 crore at Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School on Tuesday.

According to Malai Mathi, Education Coordinator, Madurai Corporation, the virtual reality lab is a digital learning platform equipped with high-end computers and internet facilities.

It allows students to perform scientific experiments on-screen, eliminating the need to be physically present in a traditional laboratory for certain complex tasks, she added.

The Virtual Reality (VR) lab is designed to make complex scientific theories found in textbooks easier to grasp through immersive, practical, and visual demonstrations.

“Students can now safely practise intricate experiments that might be hazardous or impossible to perform in a physical laboratory,” she added. The technology is expected to significantly foster students’ imagination and analytical thinking.

Established through the HDFC Bank CSR Fund, the facility enables students to experience educational concepts in a lifelike, 3D environment, Ms. Mathi noted.

This immersive technology provides students with the sensation of witnessing scientific phenomena first hand.

The lab can accommodate 25 students simultaneously. To ensure that all students under the Madurai Corporation benefit from this facility, a rotation system has been established to bring students from various schools to the Elango Corporation School.

To facilitate safe transit, a 35-seater school bus—procured through the IDBI Bank CSR Fund at a cost of ₹25 lakh—would help in transporting students from their respective campuses and back.

To ensure the effective operation of the lab, technical service providers conducted a specialised two-day training programme for teachers.

Expressing their enthusiasm, teachers at Elango Corporation School stated that the technology would provide a transformative learning experience, helping students understand complex subjects realistically and with ease.
