Congress MP from Karur S. Jothimani on Saturday said actor-turned-politician and TVK founder Vijay appeared to enjoy considerable support among the youth in Tamil Nadu and could secure the second position in the State’s political landscape in the Assembly elections. Addressing reporters in Tiruchi, Ms. Jothimani said: “In my opinion, Mr. Vijay appears to enjoy considerable support among the youth and could surely come to the second place.” She asserted that the people of Tamil Nadu would not support the BJP-led alliance in the State. “Tamil Nadu will never vote for the BJP alliance,” she said. Commenting on the shifting of Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, the Congress leader described it as “sad news” and, in a sarcastic remark, said his statements had often politically benefited their alliance. She alleged that his remarks were perceived by many as anti-Tamil and criticised what she described as attempts to portray Tamil Nadu in a negative light. His remarks on Tamil culture and the portrayal of Thiruvalluvar had drawn criticism from people in the State, she said and alleged that the Governor’s office under him had functioned “like an informal BJP headquarters”. Referring to recent political developments in Bihar, including the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Ms. Jothimani alleged that the BJP often came to power through political manoeuvres rather than electoral strength. She claimed that after Bihar, the BJP would target the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, and said the upcoming Assembly elections could be the last for the Dravidian major.
