Krishnamurthy appreciated the initiative of the students to form a ‘Tamil club’ in the university and called for more proactive steps to ensure linguistic confluence. Participating in the Tamil New Year Day celebrations held at the university on Tuesday, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his admiration for Tamil, describing it as one of the most melodious languages. Recalling his recent visit to Kanchipuram, the capital city of erstwhile Pallava dynasty, which is considered the epitome of Tamil heritage and culture, the Vice-Chancellor pointed to the academic interest generated by the presence of several thousand-year-old temples within the city. Meanwhile, the students rendered Vedic chanting, ‘Divya Prabandha Seva’, hymns from the ancient Tamil text ‘Tiruvasagam’ and also the ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’ on the occasion. Registrar K. Venkatanarayana Rao spoke on the uniqueness of Tamil language, while Sahitya department head K. Rajagopalan spoke on classical Tamil compositions and ‘Pasurams’ (Tamil hymns). Invited speaker and academic G. Shankara Narayanan explained the differences and similarities between Sanskrit and Tamil literature. Deans Rajnikant Shukla (Academic affairs) and Satyanarayana Acharya (Sahitya and Samskrita) and event coordinator C. Ranganathan participated in the event.
