Various hydel tourism projects launched in Idukki

Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty has announced the implementation of several projects aimed at revitalising the hydel tourism sector.

Speaking at the virtual inauguration of the initiatives under the Kerala Hydel Tourism Centre (KHTC) on Friday, the Minister said the projects, executed by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), are set to transform the tourism landscape of the hilly Idukki district.

The Minister inaugurated the Vadakkepuzha tourism project, Kulamavu dam mini-park, formal handover of land for a miniature model of the Moolamattom powerhouse, and virtually laid the foundation stone for a laser show project at the Idukki arch dam.

According to the Minister, the Vadakkepuzha project is situated in the Kulamavu region of the Idukki reservoir. Its main attractions include water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, and coracle boat safaris. The newly developed mini-park at Kulamavu provides a scenic resting spot where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the dam.

A major highlight is the miniature powerhouse being developed on 1.5 acres of KSEB land. Officials noted that while the Moolamattom powerhouse remains inaccessible to the public due to security restrictions, the miniature model will offer visitors an educational insight into its operations.

During the event, KSEB Director (Generation–Civil) G. Sajeev formally handed over the land documents for the project to Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine.

The laser show, to be projected onto the Idukki arch dam wall, had been in the planning stage for several years but was delayed due to technical challenges and security clearances.

“The Idukki hydroelectric project marks its 50th anniversary on February 12 and the government aims to develop the Idukki arch dam into a premier tourism destination. The project is now progressing following technical studies and recommendations from the National Dam Safety Authority,” the Minister said.

Presiding over the meeting, Mr. Augustine emphasised that the laser show would present the history and significance of Idukki to the public. He also announced that the government has granted administrative sanction for a ₹10-crore multiplex theatre complex in Idukki.

The event was attended by KHTC Director Harishil R. Meena and other senior officials.
