The sluice gates of Varattaru Dam were opened for irrigation at Vallimadurai village in Harur here on Tuesday (February 17, 2026). The water will irrigate through the left and the right ayacut canals over 5108 acres in the watershed area. The gates will remain open for 20 days each, both for water distribution through the ayacut canals for filling up of lakes and for direct irrigation. A total of 103.68 mcbft of waters will irrigate 5108 acres for a period of 40 days. The reservoir will be open till March 28, 2026. The water from the reservoir will irrigate Vallimadurai, Thadaravalasai, Samanatham, Keerapatti, Kudumiyampatti, Achalvadi, Samanatham pudur, Ellapudayampatti, Nadiyanur, Kelaparai, Etiyampatti, Mampadi, Maveripatti, Kammalampatti, and Sellampatti villages in the district. Earlier, Collector R. Sadheesh urged farmers to utilise the waters judiciously and plan their cropping for direct irrigation according to the schedule of water flow.
