An awareness programme on the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) was organised at the GITAM Deemed to be University School of Pharmacy, in collaboration with Chromachemie Laboratory Private Limited on Wednesday. USP is an independent, scientific, non-profit organisation that has been working since 1820 to build global trust in the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines, dietary supplements and foods. Through its rigorous science-based public standards, USP supports every stage of drug development and manufacturing and is globally recognised by regulators, including the U.S. FDA and ICH. GITAM School of Pharmacy principal L. Srinivas highlighted that USP established the first quality system for medicines much before the formation of the FDA in 1906. He emphasised that quality in pharmaceuticals cannot be judged by end users and depends entirely on ethical manufacturing practices and robust lifecycle management. He noted that modern quality standards now go beyond drug content to focus on purity, impurity profiling, process-related impurities, stability, metabolomics and genotoxicity. Prof. Srinivas thanked USP and Chromachemie for sharing advanced knowledge on impurity identification, quantification and reporting, which would greatly benefit students and the pharmaceutical industry. Mr. Ajey S. Rao, Managing Director, Chromachemie Laboratory Private Limited, spoke on the expansion of the pharmaceutical industry, outlining emerging growth opportunities and future directions. The session was highly interactive, with active participation and insightful discussions among students and faculty. A special session on “USP Vision and Commitment 2030” was delivered by Ms. Varsha Gowal, Senior Director (Regional Program Operations) U.S. Pharmacopeia, who outlined USP’s strategic roadmap and its continued commitment to strengthening global pharmaceutical quality and public health.
