Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday (February 1, 2026) announced that NIMHANS-2 will be set up in north India, to reaffirm the Union government’s commitment to mental health and trauma care.

Ms. Sitharaman was presenting her ninth Budget in the Parliament on Sunday (February 1, 2026).

The Finance Minister said there are no national institutes for mental health care in north India, which is why NIMHANS 2 will be set up in north India, although it was not announced where the institute will come up.

Ms. Sitharaman also announced the upgradation of national mental health institutes in Ranchi and Tezpur to regional apex institutions.

Currently, the mental health institutions in Ranchi and Tezpur are Central Institute of Psychiatry and the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health, respectively.

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) is in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which is serving as the apex centre for mental health education and neuroscience research in the country.
