The proposed opening of Udayagiri South police station in Mysuru City finds mention in the State Budget 2026-27 presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the Legislative Assembly on Friday (March 6, 2026). The announcement in the State Budget comes months after the Government approved a proposal to divide the existing Udayagiri police station into Udayagiri North and Udayagiri South police stations. In February 2025, trouble had erupted outside the Udayagiri police station when a mob attacked the police station, pelting stones and damaging vehicles during violence sparked by an allegedly offensive social media post. The existing population of areas falling under the limits of Udayagiri police station is estimated to be 3.11 lakh and the creation of a new police station is expected to more or less equally divide the population. The jurisdiction of the existing Udayagiri police station established in 1994 after being separated from Nazarbad police station limits comprises areas that are “communally sensitive”. “Over the past 26 years, the region has witnessed various criminal activities, communal riots, inter-caste and inter-religious conflicts, serious offences such as murders and attempt to murder, theft cases and changing electoral scenario, all of which had resulted in increasing pressure on the officers of Udayagiri police station”, said a proposal submitted by the Director General and Inspector General of Police to the State Government in April 2025. The area under Udayagiri police station limits comprises a significant population of Hindus, Muslims and Christians with the presence of 78 mosques, 59 temples and nine churches. “During religious festivals, Urs and temple fairs, officials and personnel from other stations in the city had to be deployed to ensure law and order”, the proposal said. The proposal had suggested Mahadevapura Main Road be considered as a boundary for dividing the existing Udayagiri police station into Udayagiri North and Udayagiri South police stations. The Mahadevapura Main Road is a highly congested road. “The road has mosques, bus depots, bus stops, banks, schools, private financial institutions, ATMs, besides vegetable, grocery shops, garment stores, medical stores, hotels, meat shops etc”, said the proposal before adding that street vendors crowd both sides of the road. In the Budget, Mr Siddaramaiah has also announced the opening a Gundlupet Traffic police station in Chamarajanagar district. The opening of 12 new police stations in the State announced by the Chief Minister includes the new police stations of Udayagiri South in Mysuru City and Gundlupet Traffic police station in Chamarajanagar district.
