Four persons were arrested in two different cases for attempting to smuggle gold and foreign currency at the Chennai airport. 940 grams of gold worth ₹1.37 crore and foreign currency worth ₹2.73 crore was seized.

In the first case, customs officials intercepted a passenger on Tuesday who arrived from Dubai, and found that he had concealed three balls of gold paste in his rectum. Officials seized 940 grams of 24K gold worth ₹1.37 crore.

Following that, they also intercepted two more persons who were waiting outside the terminal to receive the gold and the three persons involved in the case were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962 and produced before the Judicial Magistrate, according to a press release.

In the second case on Monday, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Chennai, found suspicious images in the hand baggage of a passenger. She was to depart to Dubai. CISF handed her over with her baggage to customs, the release said.

The officials found US dollars and Euro currency notes worth ₹2.73 crore. Since she didn’t declare the currency to customs or had any valid documents, it was seized and the passenger was arrested.
