Rameswaram Temple Police have registered a case against two Sri Lankan nationals who were caught attempting to return to Sri Lanka illegally by sea. Sources said Mohamed Riaz, 46, and Mohamed Jasil, 47, were previously involved in a major smuggling case. On August 18, 2025, they arrived at Chennai International Airport from Dubai, and Customs officials seized 2.5 kg of gold from them. They were arrested and remanded at Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai. The duo had recently been released on bail. Acting on specific intelligence received by the ‘Q’ Branch that the two men were planning to leave the country illegally by sea, a search was conducted. At around 9 p.m. on Tuesday (January 13, 2026), the police intercepted them near the BSNL Tower in Rameswaram. They were secured and handed over to Rameswaram Temple Police Station for further action. On Wednesday, the police officially registered a case against the accused under different sections of the Foreigners Act and the Passport Rules.
