Two men were killed and three others sustained injuries after their car rammed a heavy vehicle on National Highway 44 in Shadnagar in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as G. Madhusudan Reddy and Purushottam Reddy, were among five friends from Turkayamjal in Abdullapurmet mandal who had travelled to Arunachalam in Tamil Nadu on a pilgrimage. They left on Monday and were returning home on Tuesday night when the accident occurred.

Police said that at around 12.30 a.m., when the group reached NH-44 near SS Dhaba, a heavy vehicle suspected to be a lorry, travelling in the same direction, allegedly slowed down suddenly. Their car, who was being driven by Purushottam Reddy, rammed into the rear of the vehicle.

Purushottam Reddy and Madhusudan Reddy died on the spot. Three others travelling in the car, identified as Sridhar, Prashant Goud and Chandrakant Reddy, sustained injuries but are said to be out of danger. All five men are aged between 40 and 45 years.

Police said the airbags in the car got deployed, but the impact of the collision was severe.

Surveillance footage from the nearby areas is being examined to identify the vehicle and the accused driver. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
