RAJU In a first-of-its-kind initiative under ‘Operation Jyothirgamayee’, the city police, in collaboration with the Nee Thodu Society (NTS), have provided a new lease of life to transgender persons by enabling them to run the ‘Jyothirgamayee Canteen’ within the Women Police Station, which witnesses a high daily footfall of complainants. A group of four transgender persons is managing the canteen, serving tea, coffee, meals and evening snacks to visitors and staff. The facility was inaugurated by Commissioner of Police Shankabrata Bagchi last week and has since been receiving a positive response. Around 30 to 40 people are opting for meals in the afternoon every day.
