Traders of Leigh Bazaar in Shevapet, on Tuesday (February 17, 2026), demanded the Salem Corporation to reduce the taxes. Speaking to reporters along with Leigh Bazaar traders, president of the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peramaippu Salem district, Periyasamy, said that due to the increase in taxes for commercial establishment buildings in Salem Corporation, traders who paid ₹5,000 in taxes are now forced to pay ₹1.50 lakh. Traders are already struggling due to the hike in power tariff. “We have taken this demand to the Salem Corporation multiple times, but no action has been taken,” he alleged. Before the announcement of the State Assembly elections, the taxes should be reduced. If not, traders will close their shops and protest, Mr. Periyasamy added.
