Travails of the textile industry caused by the 50 % tariff on exports imposed by the U.S. must be addressed by the Union Government on a war-footing, Tiruppur Lok Sabha MP K. Subbarayan said on Tuesday. Mr. Subbarayan wondered why Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not yet condemned the tariff structure, and faulted the Centre for allying with Israel, in a departure from its traditional policy. The Central Government should immediately initiate consultations with industry organisations in the textile hubs and safeguard the jobs of workers. Cotton production in Tamil Nadu was on decline, Mr. Subbarayan said, calling for incentives. He also advocated a reasonable solution to the demand of poultry farmers for revision of rearing rates, and opposed arrest of the protesters highlighting the demand.
