Road hazard

The State Highways serves as the only entry point to Thoothukudi town from Palayamkottai. This road, particularly the stretch from Government Polytechnic College to Millerpuram Bus Stop, poses high risk to pedestrians and two-wheelers due to barricades and uneven terrain on both sides of the road. The width on both sides of the road is minimum, further aggravating the danger. Corporation officials, highway authorities and police department must take necessary action to address the issue.

Implementation challenges

It is a boon that goods are supplied to the elderly and differently abled at ration card holders at their doorstep under the “Thayumanavar” scheme, before 5th of every month. The workers in our area are carrying out their duties sincerely, using gadgets connected with the weighing machine and machine to verify thumb impression to prevent any errors. However, the process consumes considerable time as the available internet connectivity is not up to the mark. In addition, obtaining fingerprint impressions from the elderly is often difficult due to age-related issues. An alternative process must be introduced, such as biometric verification through iris scanning or other convenient methods.

Ecological threat

Radhapuram taluk in Tirunelveli district is known for dry land farming, particularly horticulture and floriculture sustained through lift irrigation wells, borewell pumpsets. The region once had an inland forest enriched with century old palm and baniyan trees are now replaced with windmills. Quarries and real estate business threaten the ecosystem of this terrain. In order to save this region, restrictions on quarrying and unchecked real estate development should be considered, similar to the industrial bans imposed in delta districts.

Civic neglect

Sixth Main Road in Shanthi Nagar is filled with domestic waste, and it has become the resting place for stray cattle at night. The name board of the road and trashcan which were there were also missing. With no actions from Tirunelveli corporation, the efforts of ward councillor also went in vain. Although the UGDS work has been completed in this area, the new road is yet to be laid, posing risks to two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. The authorities concerned from the Tirunelveli corporation must take necessary action to address the issue.
