Expedite construction of road overbridge

The National Highways Authority of India should expeditiously construct the proposed road over bridge at Maruthi Nagar intersection near No.1. Tollgate on the Chennai-Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway. It is the gateway to Tiruchi and a huge volume of traffic passes by the intersection. Though an automatic signal is in operation, long queues of vehicles can be seen waiting on all three sides at the junction. I urge the NHAI to build the overbridge at the earliest to reduce traffic congestion.

Unfinished road work

A stretch of Godown Road in Khajamalai is in a bad condition near the RPF training centre. The Highways Department has spread gravel and not finished the work. As a result, two wheeler riders often skid and fall when they negotiate this stretch. The State highways should soon complete the work on the road surface.

Need for traffic regulation

After the opening of a new bus stand in Srirangam, the traffic congestion has eased to some extent. Still private buses make unscheduled halts leading to traffic congestion. There is a need to deploy traffic police officials to regulate traffic and check impromptu halts of town buses.

Time to finish UGD works

Two major issues that afflict residents of Tiruchi are battered roads and unfinished underground drainage works. Time is now ripe to set the problems right as the rainy season has come to an end. The Corporation would do well to accomplish this on a warfooting before the election code of conduct kicks in.

Regulate traffic

The Big Bazaar Street from the Gandhi Market Arch to the Rockfort is a one way stretch. But vehicles, not only two wheelers, but also three wheelers, four wheelers are moving towards Gandhi Market from Singarathope. Also two wheelers and other vehicles are parked on both sides of the road, even though sign boards have been installed, asking motorists to follow a one side parking system on alternative days. For smooth movement of traffic, I request the authorities to post the police personnels again at these places.

Use of mobile phones

Usage of mobile phones among college students has been increasing. I request the Collegiate Education authorities to issue a circular to all Higher Education Institutions to ban using mobile phones inside the campus.

Railways needs to do more for senior citizens

I am constrained to bring to the notice of the concerned railway authorities of Chennai Egmore station through your newspaper paper that we three (myself 77 years of age, my wife 72 years, and my sister aged 59 years) reached Egmore station(PFno.4) at 10 p. m. on January 25 to board the 16159 MS- MAQ Express to travel to Srirangam. The train was on Platform no.9. It was raining heavily at that time. To reach PF 9 from PF no.4, we looked for a battery car which was not in sight at that time. Then we tried the lift at PF 4 which was stuck at the 1st floor for more than half an hour. Then we took the escalator at PF 4. While climbing up, my sister out of fear lost balance and fell down. While rushing to her aid, I also fell down. We both sustained injuries. As there was no Railway staff or security personnel to stop the escalator, we both could not get up. A fellow passenger came to our rescue and stopped the escalator by pressing the red button at the bottom of the escalator. There was no first aid box or any Railway staff to help us. I request the railway authorities to post a security personnel to man the escalator and also have first aid kits handy. There should be a lift operator and lift services should be available at all times for elderly people. The railways should also regulate the fares charged by the battery car operators. For senior citizens and persons with disabilities, it should be a free service.
