Commerce festival Teams from Lady Doak College, Madurai, and Cauvery College for Women, Tiruchi, won the overall championship at Festocom 2026, an inter-collegiate competition hosted by the Department of Commerce, at Bishop Heber College recently. Over 400 Commerce stream students from various colleges participated in Festocom. SDG conference A conference on the theme ‘Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): Prospects and Challenges’ was successfully organised by the PG and Research Department of Biotechnology at Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchi, created a dynamic platform for academicians, researchers, faculty members, and students from 60 colleges and universities from across India and abroad, to share knowledge on related issues recently. In his inaugural address, Abdul M. Ruknudin, biomedical scientist based in the U.S., highlighted the importance of scientific advancement and global collaboration in achieving sustainable development goals. Subject experts helmed technical sessions. Parallel sessions were held for oral, poster, and online presentations. Student fiesta The Department of Computer Applications clinched the Overall Championship Trophy and that of Commerce (Unaided) was Runner-Up, at ‘Biofest 2026’, a two-day competition held by the Departments of Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Bioinformatics at National College in Tiruchi recently. Students participated in ramp walks, make-up contests, and short film competitions, among others. Department of Commerce student Kurinji Selvan bagged the Mr. NCT title, while Computer Science student Dhivya Dharshini was crowned Miss NCT. Special address Shyam Jagadeesan, head, Product Engineering Hubs – India and Spain, Dedalus, shared his mantras of effective management as part of a ‘Learn with Leaders’ programme, organised by the Department of Management of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College in Tiruchi recently. In his address, the speaker emphasised the significance of data-driven, trust-based, and agile leadership, underscoring that modern leaders must make informed decisions and adapt swiftly to dynamic business environments. Seminar on Home Science Innovations in the subject of Home Science was the focus of a virtual seminar organised by Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College recently. Hosted by the Department of Home Science, the conference aimed at providing a multidisciplinary platform to deliberate approaches in Home Science that integrate scientific knowledge, aesthetic sensibilities, and technological advancements. Keynote speaker Sakthivel Santhanam, professor in Fashion Design, Presidency University, Bengaluru, spoke on the theme ‘Recycling Textile and Apparel Waste Materials’, highlighting the role of Home Science in promoting sustainable development and community empowerment. The technical sessions included oral presentations, e-poster presentations. Fashion showcase Hindustan College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, won the first prize, at an inter-collegiate fashion show titled ‘Golden Hemline – Season 1’ organised by the Department of Apparel and Fashion Technology of AIMAN College of Arts and Science for Women in collaboration with Shanas Institute of Technology. Valluvar College of Science and Management, Karur, and designer Shabana, Tiruchi, bagged the second and third prizes respectively. SASTRA team bags award Students attached to the SASTRA Legal Aid Clinic of the School of Law, SASTRA, have secured the Overall Champion Award at the fifth edition of ‘La Festo’, held at the Tamil Nadu National Law University, Tiruchi. They secured first place in four out of five events – ‘Eyavadhu Karavel’, Street Play, Mime and ‘Think, Create and Aid’ and emerged as runner up in the ‘Quiz Unplugged’ event. Programmes featured traditional dances, folk performances, and musical programmes. Actors Pradeep Ranganathan, Malavika Mohanan, Sreeleela, and Kalyani Priyadarshan were among the celebrity invitees. Actor and music composer G. V. Prakash Kumar held a live concert with his team. The valedictory ceremony saw actor-choreographer Prabhu Deva, dancing with students. DSU chancellor A. Skills workshop Students were given an opportunity to enhance their research and technical skills at a workshop titled ‘Ignite Innovation’ held by the Department of Biochemistry, J.J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukotttai, in collaboration with KIRIND Institute of Research and Development, Tiruchi, recently. Participants were introduced to laboratory techniques such as MTT Assay and Comet Assay, along with demonstrations of advanced instruments. A special highlight of the programme was the demonstration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in scientific research. Public speaking The former Vice-Chancellor of Universidad Arturo Prat of Iquique, Chile, Dr. Mangal, shared insights into the methodology and procedure of delivering effective academic presentations and research speeches at the World Speech Day celebrations held at PRIST Deemed to be University, Thanjavur, recently. In his address, Mr. Mangal elaborated on best practices that help scholars convey their research with clarity, impact, and international relevance. He outlined practical strategies to organise research content logically, speak confidently before audiences, and highlight key findings in a manner that enhances scholarly communication.
