The Kota Police in Udupi district have arrested two boat drivers and the boat owner in connection with capsizing of the boat in Kodi Bengre, near Hangarkatte Ship Building area, on January 26.

The police gave names of the arrested persons as boat owner Suhas Shriyan, 23, and boat drivers Sophiyan, 20, Vasu Mendon, 52, all from Kodi village in Brahmavar taluk of Udupi district.

The boat related to Wave Riders firm carried 14 tourists, all working with a BPO in Mysuru. The boat capsized while going towards Kodi Kanyaya from Delta Beach Point, Malpe, on January 26. It resulted in death of Shankarappa, 27, P. Sindhu, 23, and Disha, 26.

The Malpe Police registered the case and transferred it to jurisdictional Kota Police Station. In a press note, the police said the investigation revealed that the boat did not have permit from the Tourism Department. The boat did not have any certificate stating that the boat was fit to take tourists, the police said.

The arrested persons were booked under Sections 284 (conveying persons by water for hire in unsafe or overload vessel), 125(a) (act endangering life or personal safety), 106 (causing death by negligence), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
