Founded in 1875 and associated with figures such as Annie Besant, TSI is known for its role in India’s intellectual and freedom movements. Historical accounts say leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, had visited its centres, including the property in Chittoor that is now under dispute. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) senior leader and Andhra Pradesh State Mudaliyar Sangham president T.G. Suresh has alleged that some members within his own party carried out the encroachment, sparking sharp reactions. He questioned how nearly three acres of the society’s land, donated in 1913, could be alienated despite its heritage value. The YSRCP leader also raised concerns over the manner in which the land was registered, alleging undervaluation and the possibility of it being resold at higher prices, apprehending a scam running into over ₹100 crore. He further criticised municipal authorities for not preventing the demolition of a structure on the site. Mr. Suresh has demanded a probe by the Central agencies and sought action against those responsible for encroaching the site belonging to the organisation.
