Lok Sabha revokes suspension of eight Opposition members

The Lok Sabha passed a unanimous resolution to revoke the suspension of eight Opposition members, with Speaker Om Birla reminding the House that members should not bring fake and AI-generated posters and banners inside Parliament. “Yesterday, there were extensive discussions with leaders of all the parties, and everyone said they are committed to ensure that the dignity and glorious tradition of the House remains intact,” Mr. Birla said.

Union Govt writes to States, UTs for speedily approving pending, new gas pipeline projects 

The Union Government has written to State governments and Union Territories urging them that pending applications for laying of city gas distribution pipelines (CGD) be given deemed approval and new applications be accorded approval within twenty-four hours, Sujata Sharma, Joint-Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) told reporters here in an inter-ministerial briefing. Additionally, Ms. Sharma informed that the Union Govt has also urged that the respective governments waive off road restoration and permission charges and relax working conditions, among other things.  

Top U.S. counterterrorism official resigns over Iran war, says Iran posed no imminent threat

Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Centre, announced his resignation, saying he “cannot in good conscience” back the Trump administration’s war in Iran. Mr. Kent said on social media, Iran “posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.” There was no immediate comment from the White House.

ECI deploys over 1,000 Central observers for upcoming Assembly polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has deployed a total of 1,111 observers for the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, as well as the bye-elections in six States, with West Bengal receiving the maximum number. West Bengal has been assigned one general observer for each of its 294 constituencies, along with 84 police observers and 100 expenditure observers. Tamil Nadu has been allocated 136 general observers, 40 police observers and 151 expenditure observers. The commensurate figures for Assam are 51, 35 and 50 and for Kerala are 51, 17 and 40. For Puducherry, the numbers are 17, 4 and 17.

Cuttack hospital fire: Death toll touches 12; political row erupts

The death toll in the fire at SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack rose to 12 after two more victims succumbed to their injuries. The incident has sparked a political uproar with former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik demanding the resignation of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling. The fire broke out on the first floor of the trauma ICU in the early hours of Monday (March 16, 2026). According to hospital sources, the low staff presence at that hour delayed the initial response. Intimation to the fire services was also delayed, and the hydrant lock system could not be opened in time.

Adoptive mothers entitled to maternity leave regardless of child’s age, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court, in a judgment, declared the protection of maternity leave for working women as a basic human right while urging the Union government to legally recognise paternity leave as a social security benefit, noting that parenthood is not a solitary function performed by one parent alone. The judgment came in a challenge to provisions in the Maternity Benefit Act, which was replaced by the Code of Social Security in November 2025, which dictated that only mothers who legally adopt a child below the age of three months were entitled to seek maternity benefit of 12 weeks.

Rajya Sabha polls: Odisha Congress suspends three MLAs for cross-voting

The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) suspended three MLAs for cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections held on Monday (March 16). Ramesh Jena, Dasarathi Gamango and Sofia Firdous were suspended from the party. It was a clean sweep for the BJP, which won all the three Rajya Sabha seats.

14 arrested in Varanasi on BJP Yuva Morcha’s complaint after hosting Iftar on Ganga

Fourteen people have been arrested on charges of defiling a place of worship and hurting religious feelings after a video purportedly showing them eating chicken biryani during an Iftar party hosted on a boat in the Ganga river was widely shared on social media, officials said. The action was taken on a written complaint filed on Monday by the BJP Yuva Morcha’s city unit chief Rajat Jaiswal. The case was registered at the Kotwali police station.

ECI orders transfer of officials in Kerala ahead of Assembly polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered the transfer and posting of several officials, including IAS and IPS officers in Kerala as part of the poll preparedness for the April 9 Assembly elections. In a communication addressed to the Chief Secretary of the State, the ECI said it had reviewed the election preparedness and directed immediate implementation of the reshuffle

EC continues with transfer spree in West Bengal, Mamata says poll body should start ‘campaigning for BJP’

The Election Commission (EC) continued with its spate of transfers of top police officers in West Bengal, two days after the dates of the State’s Assembly polls were announced. Upset with the electoral body’s decisions, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the officers transferred out will return to their earlier postings once the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is lifted after the polls in May.

LPG consumption slumps 17% in March on war-related shortages

Cooking gas LPG consumption in India fell by a steep 17.7% in the first half of March on the back of supply disruptions due to war in West Asia, preliminary industry data showed. LPG consumption fell to 1.147 million tonne during the first fortnight of March, 17.3% lower than 1.387 million tonne consumed in the same period last year and 26.3% lower than 1.557 million tonne demand in the first half of February.

Parliamentary panel rebukes Ministry of Planning, Niti Aayog for poor financial management

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance pulled up the Ministry of Planning for not “planning” its finances better. The committee found that despite spending less than half of the budget allocated to it, the Ministry was allocated ever-higher amounts over the past three financial years. In its latest report tabled in the Lok Sabha, the committee called for “more realistic” planning and financial management by the Ministry. The government’s nodal think-tank, the Niti Aayog, operates through the Ministry.

A federal appeals court largely upheld a ​ruling that blocked a “sweeping and unprecedented” freeze on trillions of ⁠dollars in government financial assistance that President Donald Trump’s administration instituted early last year. A three-judge panel of the Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with Democratic officials from ‌23 states and the District of Columbia in finding that the White House’s budget office had directed federal agencies to implement a categorical ‌freeze on funding that was likely improper. 

Will provide humanitarian assistance to Iran, West Asia nations: China

China said it will provide humanitarian assistance to West Asia countries, including Iran and Lebanon, targeted in U.S. and Israeli strikes in the conflict now in its third week. Beijing is a close partner of Iran and has urged the United States and Israel to cease their attacks on the country, while also criticising Tehran’s strikes against Gulf states housing U.S. military bases.

U.S. does ‘not need’ help from allies on Iran, says Donald Trump

President Donald Trump, whose call for assistance from allies to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to oil traffic has largely been rebuffed, said that U.S. forces “no longer need” military help in the Iran war. “Because of the fact that we have had such Military Success, we no longer ‘need,’ or desire, the NATO Countries’ assistance — WE NEVER DID! Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea,” Mr. Trump posted on his Truth Social network, adding: “WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE!”
