Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi flagged off The Hindu Lit for Life Mobile Library on Monday (January 5, 2026) from The Hindu office on Anna Salai in Chennai. The initiative, started ahead of The Hindu Lit for Life 2026, aims to promote the joy of reading in schools and among communities.

As part of the annual pre-festival celebration, the mobile library has been launched with books donated by readers from across the city. Additionally, this year, a book donation drive is being conducted at The Hindu office, with special focus on children’s books, which will be distributed to schools.

Speaking at the event, the Mr. Poyyamozhi said, “Today, there is a need to focus on and improve the reading habit. It is in this spirit, that the government is holding book fairs in every district. Such initiatives will help many people wanting to read, and finally guide them towards bigger libraries, such as the Anna Centenary Library.”

The mobile library will begin touring the city from Monday for the benefit of readers at Thiruvanmiyur Beach, Anna Nagar Tower Park, Marina Beach, Besant Nagar Beach, IIT-Madras, Light House, and Mudhalvar Pathipaggam Perambur, among other areas. The library will function from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Hindu Group’s Chairperson Nirmala Lakshman said, “The mobile library is the initial attempt to take reading, writing, and creativity seen at the festival, across the city. The books are taken to people across Chennai for people to take and read.”

Suresh Nambath, Editor, The Hindu, L.V. Navaneeth, Chief Executive Officer, The Hindu, and Suresh Balakrishna, Chief Revenue Officer, The Hindu, were also present at the launch ceremony.
