TGHRC takes suo motu cognisance of 110-year-old freedom fighter’s plight

The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports highlighting the alleged neglect and ill-treatment of a 110-year-old freedom fighter from Yadadri-Bhongir district.

According to an order issued by TGHRC on Monday (March 9, 2026), the case was registered after media reports detailed the condition of Ungarala Yadagiri, a resident of Kesipalli village in Valigonda mandal. The centenarian is currently stated to be residing at a private old-age home at Boduppal in Hyderabad.

As per the reports cited by the Commission, Mr. Yadagiri earlier owned about 50 acres of agricultural land, which he had distributed among his four sons and two daughters several years ago. He had also reportedly provided financial assistance of about ₹25 lakh to his sons for the construction of houses.

However, after transferring the property, his sons allegedly neglected and subjected him to abuse, harassment and physical assault. The reports also alleged that he was forcibly driven out of the house and that his gold ornaments were taken away. Following the alleged ill-treatment, the elderly freedom fighter is presently staying at an old-age home with the support of his daughters and relatives.

The Commission has therefore called for a detailed report from the Collector of Yadadri Bhongir district, with details on the present condition and welfare of Mr. Yadagiri as well as the action taken or proposed to be taken in the matter. It issued directions to submit the report by the next date of hearing, scheduled for 11 a.m. on April 6.
