The Revenue Department on Wednesday demolished a temple near Perumanallur in Tiruppur district based on a direction from the Madras High Court for having encroached on government land.

Kumaran Kundru Arulmigu Sri Selvamuthu Kumaraswamy Temple in Eettiveerampalayam panchayat was demolished amid protest by a section of people and members of right wing organisations like the Hindu Munnani.

The demolition was carried out on Wednesday morning. Upon hearing the development, locals and members of right wing organisations rushed to the spot and opposed the process.

Sources said that Hindu Munnani State president Kadeswara Subramaniam, who took part in the agitation, suffered an injury during the scuffle between the police and the protesters.

Police officers and revenue officials held talks with the protesters, following which Mr. Subramaniam left the place and got admitted to the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital for treatment. Supporters of BJP and Hindu Munnani gathered outside the hospital, prompting the police to deploy additional force.

Hindu Munnani workers staged a protest in Coimbatore condemning the incident and accused the police of using force against its leaders and supporters.
