The persisting issues with supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) continues to trouble auto drivers in Telangana. In an attempt to address the supply issues and consequent pressure on the drivers, slack in public transportation system in the city, Telangana government took a three step measure on Monday (March 30, 2026).

Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy directed officials to explore ways to enhance existing public transportation systems, including operations of Hyderabad Metro Rail and Telangana State Public Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) buses.

On the Minister’s instruction, the Commissioner of Civil Supplies Department, Mr. M. Stephen Raveendra, wrote a letter to the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, requesting urgent intervention to scale up the supplies.

Moreover, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) were asked to ramp up supplies to bridge the shortfall faced by certain private players.

The autos have been facing issues with the LPG supply over the past few weeks. On Monday, a few auto drivers scaled a mobile tower in protest against shortage in the LPG and CNG supply in Hyderabad. These issues were discussed at length at a review meeting by the Minister with senior officials and representatives of major LPG suppliers.

The usual daily requirement of LPG for autos in Telangana is 202 Metric Tonnes (MT). Currently, 147 MT is supplied leaving a deficit of approximately 55 MT, which is around 30% of the requirement.

The LPG supply to autos here is dominated by private players including Super Gas, Go Gas, Total Energy, and Prime Gas, which has about 75% the market share and the remaining 25% (approximately) collectively by Public Sector Undertakings (PSU). The private companies source bulk LPG from ports such as Krishnapatnam, Jaigad (Maharashtra), Mumbai and Tamil Nadu.

There are 116 auto LPG outlets within the Outer Ring Road and 27 outside it. Currently, around 25 outlets are non-functional, including 17 in the core city area.

The shortage has been triggered by two to three day delays in the arrival of carrying imported LPG, compounded by the prevailing geopolitical situation in the West Asia affecting global supply chains. Private companies source bulk LPG from ports such as Krishnapatnam, Jaigad (Maharashtra), Mumbai and terminals in Tamil Nadu, as per a press note.

Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy said that a final decision on the contingency measures would be made after consultations with Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and briefing Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on the ground realities.
