Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin on Wednesday (February 18, 2026) exhorted the party workers to ensure at least 50% of the votes cast in every polling booth in the upcoming elections to Assam’s 126-member Assembly.

He was specific about the eastern part of the State, dominated by the indigenous and “tea tribes” communities, which gave the BJP the bulk of its Assembly seats in 2016 and 2021.

The party is believed to face a challenge from a trio of Gogois — Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and his counterparts Akhil Gogoi of Raijor Dal and Lurinjyoti Gogoi of Assam Jatiya Parishad — in eastern Assam. Their parties are allies.

Addressing BJP workers at a Panna Pramukh Sammelan in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh, Mr. Nabin sought booth-level mobilisation of members of the party and associates to ensure that NDA candidates get 50% of the votes cast in each polling station. He lauded them for helping the BJP secure more than 45% votes in the last two elections.

Mr. Nabin said Congress was not fit to govern Assam. “Congress used Assam for vote bank politics. The BJP is working with the people and has the policy, intent, and capability to rule for another term,” he said.

Thanking Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for safeguarding the interests of Assam’s indigenous people, he defended the State government’s action against “Bangladeshi infiltrators” and the drive to eject encroachers of government lands. “The impact of the drive against illegal immigrants is being felt in Kerala and West Bengal,” he added.

Earlier, Mr. Sarma said he was confident that the BJP would improve upon its 2021 tally of 60 seats. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who represents the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, criticised Congress for letting the Assamese with allegedly “anti-citizens” laws like the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, scrapped by the Supreme Court in 2005.
