The Greater Chennai City Police have booked Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader C. Joseph Vijay and his party cadre for conducting his election campaign in Perambur in a manner causing inconvenience to the public.

The case was registered by the Peravallur police of the Greater Chennai City Police based on a complaint by V. Kumar, an officer in-charge of the Static Surveillance Team of the Kolathur Assembly constituency. The complainant stated that on Monday (March 30, 2026), while he was on duty at SRP Koil South Street towards Peravallur Junction, around 3,000 members belonging to the TVK gathered on the road, holding party flags and causing obstruction to the public and vehicular traffic.

At about 3.40 pm, TVK leader Mr. Vijay arrived in a campaign vehicle along with others. Subsequently, around 5,000 party cadres assembled, blocking the movement of the public, ambulances, and other vehicles. About 30 loudspeakers were installed on the roadside, and slogans of the TVK were raised at high volumes while Mr. Vijay carried out election campaigning until 3.45 pm. A roadshow was also conducted, further disrupting traffic, the complainant said.

The officer said permission was granted to the TVK to conduct election campaigning only between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., with a maximum of 500 participants and the use of five sound systems. However, violating these election norms, the gathering took place much earlier, at around 3.40 p.m., under the leadership of Mr. Vijay, with nearly 5,000 people and 30 sound systems, causing disturbance to the public and traffic. The complainant has requested legal action against those responsible.

The case was registered under Sections 126(2) (obstruction of public movement) 189(2) (violation of permitted conditions and unlawful gathering), 223 (public nuisance and disruption) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and provisions of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act.
