With the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in force for the Assembly election scheduled on April 23, 2026, enforcement agencies have stepped up round-the-clock vehicle checks across the district. Officials have advised the public to carry valid documents while transporting goods and cash.

The district, which has eight Assembly constituencies, has deployed 72 flying squads and 72 static surveillance teams to monitor the movement of cash, valuables and other goods. Each team is accompanied by a videographer to document inspection proceedings.

District Election Officer and Collector S. Kandasamy said valid documents must be produced for cash exceeding ₹50,000 during transit.

Teams are conducting continuous checks across the district, including at the Karapallam checkpost near Hasanur for vehicles entering Tamil Nadu from Karnataka. Police presence has been strengthened at border checkposts in Thalavadi, Hasanur and Bargur Hills.

Officials said ₹39.91 lakh in unaccounted cash has been seized so far, of which ₹5.57 lakh was later released upon verification of valid documents.

In Salem, District Election Officer and Collector R. Brindha Devi inspected the vehicle checks at various places on Tuesday night (March 17, 2026).
