Tamil Nadu Local Bodies Ombudsman has directed Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) to take departmental action against Virudhunagar Municipal officials concerned, in case of irregularities detected in imposing property tax on commercial buildings.

Besides, Ombudsman Mahesan Kasirajan, also directed the DMA to take action against the officers who failed to initiate steps against unauthorised buildings in the town.

The Ombudsman, in his report dated December 24, 2025, directed Virudhunagar Municipal Commissioner to take expeditious action against buildings constructed without building plan approval and those buildings that had violated the approved plan.

He was hearing a complaint lodged by a social activist A. Sakthivel of Virudhunagar, who had complained against the municipal authorities for failing to take action against such commercial buildings.

The complainant said that several buildings, including marriage halls, textile shops, jewellery shops, supermarket and electronic goods showroom had violated approved building plan or did not have any building plan approval.

These commercial buildings also lacked proper parking facility.

The inaction of the municipal officials resulted in huge loss to the local body by way of property tax. He had listed out several shops across the town.

The Commissioner has been instructed to take measurement of the buildings and levy the property tax as per the Government guidelines in force.

Besides, he instructed the Regional Director of Municipal Administration, Tirunelveli to conduct inspection to find out if any irregularities in levying of property tax had occurred.
