T.N. Drugs Control directorate issues alert on syrup adulterated with Ethylene Glycol

Tamil Nadu’s Directorate of Drugs Control has issued a public notice warning against the purchase, sale and consumption of a specific batch of Almont-Kid Syrup following laboratory reports of adulteration with Ethylene glycol, a toxic substance.

In the drug alert issued in public interest recently, the directorate has explicitly prohibited the purchase, sale, and consumption of Almont-Kid Syrup (Levocetrizine Dihydrochloride and Montelukast Sodium Syrup), Batch number AL-24002 (manufacturing date of January 2025 and expiry date of December 2026), manufactured by Tridus Remedies, Vaishali in Bihar, citing serious health risks.

Adulteration with ethylene glycol is highly dangerous, as this chemical is toxic and can cause severe poisoning, including kidney failure and death. Retailers, distributors, hospitals, and pharmacies in Tamil Nadu have been directed to remove this batch from stocks immediately and report if the product was supplied or sold. Consumers are advised to check the batch details and avoid usage, and anyone who possesses this product should submit it to the authorities for proper disposal, it said.

The directorate also urged healthcare providers to monitor for symptoms of ethylene glycol poisoning in patients who may have consumed the affected syrup. Adverse reactions or suspected cases must be promptly reported to the Directorate of Drugs Control for further investigation.
