The Director-General of the Income-Tax (Investigation), Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has set up a 24×7 control room, following a direction from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to monitor election expenditure, so that financial influence on voters could be eliminated ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the State and the Union Territory.

“The role of the Directorate is to provide assistance for free and fair elections by controlling the role of unaccounted funds in the election process. In pursuance of this objective, the Investigation Directorate will take proactive steps to discover and seize unaccounted funds intended to be utilised for electioneering and influencing voters in the State of Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry,” an official release said.

As part of this initiative, the Director-General has set up a 24×7 control room with a toll free number, a designated fax, and email and WhatsApp facilities to receive complaints/information from public.”

Persons with information about the storage, possession, or movement of large amounts of cash, jewellery, or other valuables and freebies were requested to pass it on to the department through any one of the modes mentioned above, the release said. “The identity of the persons giving the information will be kept confidential,” it added.
