Suraj Lama, a native of Bengaluru who went missing in Kochi after being deported from Kuwait and was later found dead near the HMT Company premises in Kalamassery, was cremated here on Sunday. The cremation was held at the public crematorium at Kalamassery in the presence of his family members including wife and son. The family reportedly decided to conduct the final rites of Mr. Lama in Kochi due to the advanced state of decomposition of the mortal remains. Lama’s body was handed over to his family by the Kalamassery Medical College Hospital following a Kerala High Court order directing the hospital authorities to release the remains to his wife and son with “all courtesies and honour”. The 58-year-old Bengaluru resident with severe cognitive impairment had gone missing after being deported to Kochi from Kuwait in October 2025. His death was confirmed after a forensic DNA report matched his identity with a decomposed body found in Kalamassery in November. On Friday, the Kerala High Court had apologised to Mr. Lama’s family for alleged lapses in the police investigation and systemic failures.
