Supreme Court favours Telangana HC verdict upholding Group-1 results; CM hails it as recognition of transparency

Bringing an end to prolonged legal uncertainty surrounding the Group-1 appointments in Telangana, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a batch of petitions challenging the recruitment of 563 candidates to Group-1 posts by the Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC).

The Bench, comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, favoured the earlier verdict of the Telangana High Court, which upheld the Group-1 Mains results and permitted the State government to go ahead with the appointments.

The Bench said that it was not inclined to interfere with the High Court judgement and dismissed the Special Leave Petitions filed by P. Adhitya and others.

The petitioners alleged procedural and substantive irregularities in the conduct of the Group-1 Mains examination held to fill 563 vacancies, and challenged the results. The objections raised were issuance of dual hall tickets, alleged non-transparent centre allocation, lack of moderation in evaluation, inconsistencies in the English qualifying paper, and alleged bias against Telugu medium candidates.

The unsuccessful candidates said that a single Judge Bench of the High Court had found violations and directed re-evaluation, but the Division Bench set it aside asking the Government to proceed with the appointment orders.

CM Revanth welcomes the verdict

Welcoming the verdict, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said the judgment was a recognition of the government’s transparency and integrity in public appointments.

“I welcome the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Telangana Group-1 recruitment matter. I consider this a validation of our government’s commitment to transparency and sincerity in job appointments,” he said in a social media post.

The Chief Minister reminded that Group-1 aspirants had waited for years in uncertainty, struggling with anxiety over their future prospects. “For years, candidates waited with hope and despair, uncertain whether their dream of securing a government job would materialise. This verdict brings immense relief to those aspirants who endured a decade of delay,” he said.

He said that soon after assuming office, the Congress Government issued the notification, conducted the examinations, and handed over appointment letters within months.

He accused ‘vested interests’ of attempting to stall the process through conspiracies but said the government successfully overcame those challenges.

“We have ensured that these young officers become partners in the reconstruction of Telangana as the first batch of Group-1 recruits under the new government. My congratulations to them once again,” he said.

The Chief Minister also extended special appreciation to the TGPSC Chairman, officials and staff for overhauling the system in line with the government’s vision, restoring confidence among unemployed youth, and completing the recruitment process in a transparent manner.
