A 19-year-old student was killed and his friend critically injured after a truck rammed into their scooter on Mathura Road in south Delhi on Friday.

The accident took place between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m. near the Modi Mill flyover. According to police, a PCR call was received around 12:30 a.m. reporting an unconscious person at the spot. Multiple calls from passers-by also informed the police about a major accident, which led to heavy traffic congestion in the area. After reaching the spot, officers found that a scooter had been hit by a truck heading towards Badarpur. The truck, loaded with grocery items, was travelling from Badli to Nagpur.

The deceased has been identified as Manav, 19, a resident of Sarai Julena. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The injured, Md. Saad, 21, a resident of Jamia Nagar, remains in critical condition. The police said the scooter was registered in Saad’s father’s name. The truck driver, Jahul, 32, a resident of Nuh in Haryana, has been detained. He has been working for the vehicle owner, Rashid, for the past two years. The driver claimed to possess a valid driving licence and insurance documents, which are currently being verified, the police said.

A crime team inspected the spot and collected evidence. No helmets were recovered from the spot. A case under relevant sections of law has been registered, and further investigation is under way, the police said.
