A second-year student of the integrated B.Tech course, identified as Vasantha, 19, at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) in Basar of Nirmal district, allegedly committed suicide on the university campus in the wee hours of Wednesday. A sense of gloom pervaded the RGUKT, popularly known as IIIT Basar, following the tragic suicide of a girl student who hailed from Wanaparthy district. Sources said that she allegedly hanged herself to death in her hostel room in the wee hours of the day. Police suspect personal issues could have driven her to take the extreme step. Sources added that she took the drastic step shortly after receiving a phone call about the ‘suicide’ of a youth in her native place. Her body was shifted to the government hospital in Bhainsa. The Basar police have registered a case and are investigating. Local student organisations have long been demanding the setting up of a counselling centre on the RGUKT campus to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
