In a significant step towards strengthening Kerala’s power infrastructure, the State’s first large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) will be established at Mylatti in Kasaragod.

Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty will inaugurate the construction of the project on Saturday (February 28).

The project, one of the largest battery storage systems in India and the first of its kind in the State, is expected to serve as a crucial milestone for the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) in addressing emerging power challenges and enhancing grid stability.

The advanced storage facility with a capacity of around 125 MW will be capable of handling up to 5 lakh units of electricity daily. Its primary objective is to store surplus power generated from solar power plants during daytime and feed it back into the grid during peak evening hours when demand is highest. The project is being implemented with Viability Gap Funding support from the Union Government.

The plant is being constructed by JSW Neo Energy within the 220 kV substation compound at Mylatti. As per the agreement, the board has decided to offer an incentive of over ₹8 crore if the company completes construction within the stipulated timeframe.

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to reduce KSEB’s dependence on purchasing high-cost electricity from external sources during night hours, thereby improving cost efficiency and supply reliability.

The initiative is also part of a broader plan to transform Kasaragod into a solar energy hub. In addition to Mylatti, the electricity department has initiated steps to establish smaller battery storage units at Sreekandapuram, Pothencode, and Areekode. Authorities aim to commission the Mylatti project on a commercial basis by October.
