Livestock farmers in Tiruppur district have expressed disappointment over the compensation fixed by the State government in the second phase of disbursal for livestock, cattle and poultry birds that had been killed by wandering dogs. The compensation rates fixed last year: ₹6,000 for a goat/sheep, ₹37,500 for a head of cattle, and ₹200 per poultry bird, has been retained. For the second phase disbursal of compensation, there is an additional specification that the amount will be lesser for the animals and birds that were not fully grown. The compensation rate fixed for a goat/sheep below six months is ₹3,000, a cattle head below two years is ₹6,000, and a poultry bird below six weeks is Rs. 100. Livestock and cattle farmers in Tiruppur district who received ₹15 lakh as compensation in the first phase are set to receive ₹38.32 lakh in the second phase. The losses faced by 358 farmers due to deaths of 1,389 livestock, cattle and poultry birds were calculated to arrive at the amount. The compensation for Tiruppur livestock farmers accounts for the largest chunk out of ₹65.3 lakh sanctioned for the purpose in 11 districts. Eighty-eight farmers in adjacent Erode district are to receive ₹12.41 lakh for loss of 564 livestock.
