In a society drawn to material aspects, spirituality is vital for every individual to lead a balanced and effective life, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in Coimbatore on Sunday, while taking part in Mahashivrathri celebration at Isha Yoga Centre.

Once the inner potential is realised, the individual’s contribution becomes a variable agent for society and nation, he said, after presenting Bhavya Bharat Bhushan Awards instituted this year as an annual feature to recognise distinguished personalities.

The Defence Minister commended Isha Foundation for making the message of Indian philosophy easier to understand for people getting entangled in compulsions of action or sinking into inertia. India has offered yoga in renewed form; the spiritual essence of Indian culture is embraced across the world.

The Defence Minister and Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Founder of Isha Foundation, presented the awards to nine distinguished personalities, including N. Rajam, Violonist; Alarmel Valli (Arts and Entertainment), Nambi Narayanan (Science and Technology), A.S. Kiran Kumar (Science and Technology), Vikram Sampath (Literature and Academics), and Saina Nehwal (Sports).

Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra of Western Air Command, Vice Admiral Rahul Vilas Gokhale of Western Naval Command, and Lt. Gen. A.V.S. Rathee, Indian Army, received the awards in honour of Operation Sindoor.

In his address, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev said the special night of transcendence was meant to instil a natural surge of realisation that one can never be the impediment for becoming the maker of own life.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan, Home Minister of Puducherry A. Namassivayam, and former Minister S.P. Velumani also took part.
