With the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS), New Delhi, set to inspect the newly completed Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) extension project from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount on Thursday, the Southern Railway has planned to undertake a high-speed trial with an air conditioned electrical multiple unit (EMU). A senior official of Southern Railway said the CCRS would carry out statutory inspection in a motor trolley from St. Thomas Mount to Velachery for detailed examination of the track and associated infrastructure. After this a high-speed trial run will be undertaken using a nine-car AC EMU train between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount stations. The trial will assess track geometry, riding quality, signalling performance, working of overhead equipment and compliance with other prescribed safety standards. The Southern Railway is deploying an Advanced Track Recording Systems for the speed trial to verify track parameters and ensure adherence to safety and quality norms.
