Purchase, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Ducks (20-18) fell 5-4 in game one before dropping the second contest 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Valiants struck early in game one, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. The first run came on a single through the right side, followed by a sacrifice fly to bring in the second. Stevens got one back in the second, as Rachael Prescott led off with a single to left-center. The senior advanced to third on a double down the left field line by Emma Ruiz, and Riley Lawrence put Stevens on the board with an RBI single to right.
Manhattanville extended its lead in the bottom of the second, plating two runs on a two-out RBI single. The Ducks chipped away in the third, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Emma Quattrochi led off with a triple to left-center before Jessica Hsu drove her in with a single up the middle.
Stevens continued to claw back in the fourth. Allison Mitloff reached on a bunt single, stole second, and scored on a single up the middle by Madison Subbiondo. The Ducks tied the game at four in the fifth when Quattrochi scored on a groundout by Prescott after reaching on a single and advancing on a stolen base and groundout. Stevens nearly took the lead in the sixth, but pinch-hitter Carmelita Murphy-Brown was thrown out at the plate in a rundown trying to score. Manhattanville secured the game one win with a walk-off single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
In game two, Stevens struck first. Consecutive singles by Elizabeth Kirstein and Quattrochi put two on with one out. Hsu then reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Kirstein to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead. The Valiants tied it in the bottom of the second on a solo home run. The score remained even through the next two innings.
The Ducks regained the lead in the fifth. Lilian Cournoyer led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Megan Curtis. Quattrochi followed with an RBI single to right-center to make it 2-1. However, the lead was short-lived as Manhattanville responded with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 3-2. The Valiants added an insurance run in the sixth, and Stevens couldn’t rally back, falling 4-2 in the nightcap.
